this is most commonly caused by some control rate message feedback, it 
happens occasionally when you mix up sends and receives as in:

 [r foo]
  |
  .
  .
  do sth. complex enough to make it less
  ovious that we end up sending it back
  into foo again ...
  .
  .
  |
 [s foo]
