[PD] Sample rate problem

OK. My sample rate problem still won't resolve itself.
I've tried specifying -r 44100 in the command line but
the sample rate still sets itself to 22050. 

Before launching PD the sample rate is 44100 and it
always gets set to 22050 upon launching! Changing the
rate in the audio settings dialogue has no effect
either!

Has anyone experienced a similar thing? Is there a
solution?
