You could use the xeq-external to store, sequence,... MIDI data.
I've made a patch with xeq few weeks ago, wich records MIDI-data and then
you can store it as a MIDI-file, or play it back.
(I can send it to you if it helps -  but I'm not on my computer now, so I
could send it tomorrow)
