[PD] quick question about GRID

I'm essentially reading in a matrix and using the mouse via the grid to access the matrix elements. If I can access the variables from the patch then I could resize the grid according to the dimensions of the matrix. Is there any other way I could do this? Otherwise, how easy is it to implement? (I'm not really a programmer.)
Eventually I'm suppose to plug the works into a force-feedback joystick instead of a mouse to enhance the user experience...if this could be done straight with any pd/joystick interface I could skip the dynamic changing of grid attributes.

Any suggestions would be really appreciated,

Yasmin.
