you're right. i can't think of any spectacular use for it either.

there are some commands you can send to a subpatch by name. for example, 
if your subpatch is [pd mySubpatch] you can reference it as 
pd-mySubpatch. and a [;pd-mySubpatch vis 1( message from the parent 
would display it.
