Well, it's not the only object. For example [select] works the same.
Creating a [select somesymbol] object allows you to set the selector
by using [symbol someother( messages, but not with just a [someother(
message. 

The lister object's left inlet also wants to know which type is coming
in. Even a float wants to: try sending a [symbol 12( message to store.
It won't work.
