[PD] how objects are numbered

I want to change connections between objects in a large patch.
I'm using |connect...( messages, but what is the way that objects are numbered?

Is it from the start of the file in order?
If so will the numbers change as I alter the patch?
Must I count through the patch or can I use the GUI?
Are sub patches self-contained or do they follow the main numbering?
