furthermore i noticed (without looking at the code) that the text-buffer 
has an unlimited size, which means  that i quickly will occupy huge 
amounts of memory.
i think it would be better to have an option to set the maximum number 
of lines that go into the buffer (or rather: the maximum number of chars 
divided by 80) and forget the oldest messages.
defaults e.g. to 500 and "-1" would be unlimited....
