Thanks Guenter for the work on the patch. Indeed things seem to be
detected fine by configure, but make has some problems:

g++ -c -fPIC -g -O2  -I/usr/X11R6/include -I/usr/include/freetype2   -I..  -I/usr/include/FTGL -I/usr/include/avifile-0.7  TextBase.cpp -o TextBase.o
In file included from TextBase.cpp:17:
TextBase.h:23:20: FTFont.h: No such file or directory

My FTGL directory is in /usr/local/include not /usr/include. Is it
possible that configure is overwriting detected settings with some sort
of default (line 5565 of configure)?
