[PD] Gem - undefined symbol: GetVideoWidth__CQ23avm10StreamInfo

hello,

i have compiled gem-0.90.0 for pd 0.37-1, because i want to try pmpd and 
it compiles fine, but when i start pd, loading Gem fails with:
gem-0.90.0/src/Gnu/Gem.pd_linux: undefined symbol: 
GetVideoWidth__CQ23avm10StreamInfo
Gem: can't load library

i have tried to use both gcc-2.95 and gcc-3.3, have the latest versions 
of the debian video libraries and i have tried to configure with 
--disable-new with no effect.
might  there be anything else worth trying?
