the symbol hash table or a new one? if it's the symbol hash table, it
shouldn't be a big problem to adapt the code ... 

anyway, i'm currently thinking of a way to implement a hash table api to
pd, implementing a lock-free, thread-safe hash table ... at least for
the x86 architecture, since i'm not able to test on a mac ...
