Having two subwindows would work; the graphics hardware in the PORTAL
supports both twin mode and quad mode. The subwindow option would work
in twin mode. A quad option would be great to have, but twin will do.

This sounds interesting, but I'm a bit worried here. When you say 'remote
windows', do you mean X forwarding? My experience is that X forwarding in
the PORTAL slows things down quite a bit.
