i had a smilar problem for years (sic!) ;] until acracia/tati lightened my
world! (thanks!) ;]

to create mov files encoded with jpeg, transcode is the tool you need. it
should be available from marillat deb archives
/etc/apt/sources entry:
deb-src ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ unstable main

to convert mpg file to pdp_yqt-playable mov just do:
transcode -Z 320x240 -f 25 -y mov -F jpeg -i FILE.mpg -o FILE.mov

there are some problems with audio, but that should set you up.
