well, i don't think that the equation "threads == evil", although it
seems to be quite common among pd developers.

- as pd itself uses the pthreads, the only limitation of crossplatform
  portability would crossplatform portability issue of pd itself
- flext is offering a nice wrapper for threading libraries
- the equation "threads == locks && locks == evil" is not correct
  either. the lock-free fifos that are used for the idle callbacks in
  devel make it possible to have a lock-free thread synchronization and
  miller is planning to use them in 0.39. and even locks are only
  then evil, if a thread is being locked for too long.
