[PD] pd & ubuntu - nothing happens

hi folks.

i hope someone here has an idea of what's going wrong.  i'm running
ubuntu hoary 5.04 and i installed puredata via apt.  i try running
"pd" and nothing happens.  when i run the command from a terminal, it
just sits there with no result.  eventually, i hit control-c and get
"Pd: signal 2"

i also tried downloading and building from source, but have the same issue.

any ideas?  i know it's hard without any error messages.
