[PD] PDP and MIDI

I've been playing with PDP, and I'm trying to control it with my
MIDI control surface. There seems to be a lot of latency, though,
whenever PDP is rendering, almost half a second. It happens
whether I'm using my USB control surface or a midi-sequencer
plugged into the midi port of my audio card. When I stop
rendering PDP, MIDI returns to normal. any ideas?
