[PD] more strange behaviours on 0.38.3

I think the old help browser was much better than the menu... for some
reason it wasn't working on Mac though, which is why (for 0.38-3) I borrowed
the menu code from Hans-Christof.  But it seems to be causing so many problems
that I agree we should go back to help browsing.
