hmm...

do other applications work (like dvgrab) ?

is compiling the CVS version of gem an option for you ? (libdv-dev has 
changed after the gem-0.90 release, so günther had to hack gem a bit in 
order to compile...)

i'll check as soon as i can find a dv-cam lying around...

yes, these tasks should be _very simple and efficient_ with gem.
