your pdp_xv issue is a graphical driver problem,
you have to fix your X configuration.
pdp_glx is slower for bigger resolutions.

you should read the quicktimes with pdp_qt, not pdp_live~,
to sum up :

.mov -> pdp_qt
.avi, .mpg -> pdp_live~
.ogg -> pdp_heorin~
