...um, "the versions of the externals, especially GEM", is  
missing ;-)  A fairly recent (ie. in last 6 months) version from cvs  
is necessary...

...also, did you compile 0.39-2 yourself?  I haven't used it  
yet...and I'm not sure if it's using the dlopen or the NSBundle  
loader code...and why are you putting externals in /bin?
