ps- As far as the debian/ubuntu divide goes, the relationship (as far as the 
user's concerned) is a bit like this: ubuntu has slightly more modern 
packages, though a slightly narrower selection, and is more intrusive. Not 
that that's a bad thing for new users, but it will do more for you and run 
more things in the background to automatically manage hardware etc. Also I 
think it might by default run esd, which could interfere with jack and real 
audio apps.
