...like chris says, we don't limit you, but your hardware does ;-)   
The salient parameter here is MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE &/or  
MAX_RECTANGLE_TEXTURE_SIZE_EXT:  in general, nvidia hardware tops out  
at 4096 and ATI at 2048...but a software renderer usually does  
16384...btw, I'm getting this info from http://homepage.mac.com/ 
arekkusu/bugs/GLInfo.html

...so, if you want something higher than your hw can handle, you can  
always do a multiple pass render changing the view frustum and then  
stitch the two screen grabs in another program...
