[PD] GEM problem linuxppc

hi

i have been tring to rid myself of a funky problem with Gem on linuppc[ubuntu] without any luck so i am putting this to the list again hopefully for some insights.

when i start a gemwin, any one. the window is created as usual but there is no image/movie input i the gemwindowunitl the window is touched or re-sized. Is there a way to cure this?

I am pretty sure the drivers are mesa, the card is a ati radeon 9600, glxgears and info both seem to work
i have compiled gem-0.90.0 from source a few time and thought i had missed something. 
any suggestions?
