The Pd-extended build system relies on packages/Makefile.buildlayout,  
so hid does too.

I haven't updated the docs since moving the build system into the Pd- 
extended.  The hid-specific makefile should probably be removed since  
I use externals/Makefile now.

What platform? Which kernel? Which devices?  Which version of [hid]?
