pd is a 2-part application: a (dsp-)kernel, which does all the
calculations (not just dsp), and the gui-part, which displays the
objects and the like (this is the part you are interacting with)
these 2 parts are talking via a network connection to each other (this
is by design, so the gui can run on a different computer, or not at all)
this network communivation is the reason why "personal" firewalls are
often tricked into thinking that it is an illegal piece of software.
however, usually you can configure your firewall to allow certain
applications to use certain connections.
