[PD] dssi~ can't find instruments

Yes, I tried.
It makes no difference.

i can load
[dssi~ trivial_synth.so]
or
[dssi~ /usr/lib/dssi/trivial_synth.so]

dssi~ says:
dssi~: error: plugin not loaded

since I get a warning about LADSPA_PATH and DSSI_PATH not defined, I 
tried to type this before starting pd:

$ export LADSPA_PATH=/usr/lib/ladspa:/usr/local/lib/ladspa
$ export DSSI_PATH=/usr/lib/dssi:/usr/local/lib/dssi
$ pd

but I get the same errors.

compiling with debug infos doesn't produce additional output at all.
