[PD] Midi Speedo?

Hi all,

I'm thinking about using an exercise bike as an interface for a video
installation. I'm currently thinking I could perhaps use a speedometer to
get midi data to use in PD.

I've only ever used HID input to PD. Can anyone give me any pointers as
where to begin with such a task?! Is it even possible to gather the data I
need from a non midi device like a bike speedo?
