For a start, you don't have access to those devices (unless you're root). Only 
root and those in the root group have rw access. You could probably fix it 
temporarily (ubuntu uses udev, no? the device nodes get recreated every boot) 
by chmod'ing the nodes to 0666 or making the group owner a group that you are 
in. 'audio', perhaps.

More permanently, you'll probably want to fiddle with the udev rules file to 
tell it to create the nodes as belonging to the audio group in future. (0660 
root:audio)
