[PD] How can I get PD to address more than two channels?

Dear members of the pd list,

I just wrote a simple patch to output 8 different osc~ signals to 8 
channels of my Hercules FW 16/12 Interface.
Unfortunately PD refuses to address more than channels 1 and 2 although 
I have set the number of channels to 8 resp. 16 in the audio settings.
How can I get PD to address all the recommended 8 channels?
