[PD] PD/max overlaping - Block~, Switch~

Hi everyone,
I started to work with maxmsp and there we had the [pfft~] object that 
creates the overlaping like [block~] and [switch~] do in a subpatch on PD.
I am working very well with PD and spectral processing, but then I had a 
more theretical doubt:
What should be really an overlap? There are two possibilities that I figure:

1: Read continuosly a signal and overlaps on while readin. example:
Imagine two 8-sample signal vectors on loop with these values:
(0 0.125 0.25 0.375 0.5 0.625 0.75 0.875) (1 0.66 0.33 0 1 0.66 0.33 0)

These signal should be read on a subpatch with [block~ 8 2 1].
If it were read continuosly I would have for which element of the overlap:
(0 0.125 0.25 0.375 0.5 0.625 0.75 0.875) and
                                (0.5 0.625 0.75 0.875 1 0.66 0.33 0)

2: Read a signal vector and delay it:
(0 0.125 0.25 0.375 0.5 0.625 0.75 0.875) and
                                (0 0.125 0.25 0.375 0.5 0.625 0.75 0.875)

It seens that PD's [block~] and [switch~] work on second manner (see 
patch transcribed below).. But my question is this: To work with 
windowed signals for use with [fft~] and [rfft~] it wouldn't be better 
to overlap while reading? So I would have more spectral details because 
the windowing of the two overlaps would "cut" different informations of 
the signal...

If Puckette read this message, I have a question: On Max/MSP the 
overlapig of pfft~ object works like that too? It seens to work on the 
first way... I am asking to you because I imagine that you had 
implemented it on Max.
