i know of no usb-capture _card_ that is supported by linux (but last 
time i looked is >1 year ago)

as long as your device is supported by video4linux you will be able to 
use it with pdp (and thus pidip)

Gem also supports ieee1394 (aka firewire) cards, but it is unlikely that 
any usb-device will be accessible via that interface (so no need to use Gem)

however, there are bridges between Gem and pdp so you can use output 
from one as input to the other (e.g. use ieee1393 devices with pdp or do 
video-streaming with Gem)

btw, there is also a pix_freeframe object
