plogue bidule isn't free..and if you want to build your own fx, you are much more limited. if you want to use someone else's fx, its a great choice..

are you sure about that? have you tried compiling vst~? i don't see any reason pd wouldn't support VST other than nobody bothered to compile vst~.pd_darwin yet..
