There is also a way to make an IR camera froam
a black and white IR security camera. these are usually
less than USD $100, though low-rez, often they will have a ring of IR
LED's around the lens and will switch to IR mode in low light.

The trick is to filter out white light (visible  light)
You can use regular stage light gels (I've used the ones from a roscolux 
sample pack and they work just fine).  This dude explains it:
