Quite so. And somewhat connected to the ongoing thread on tuning
scales Chuckk Hubbard inspired me to experiment with using ratios
to create the separation parameters. Download my Sparkle synth
and rip out the [phasorbank] unit. It has four inputs, a pitch base,
two ratio inputs (numerator and denominator) and a fine tune offset.
If you supply simple integer ratios, like 13/16, 20/21 or whatever, you
will obtain extremely rich pad sounds with interesting harmonic spectrums.
The twist comes when you detune these by a very small amount and obtain
slowly shifting patterns where harmonics pop out in sequences.
Risset created a couple of pieces based on these effects of microtonal
detuning, only with sines. I discovered a similar, perhaps better, effect
based on this "diffraction" occurs when you sweep a narrow bandpass filter
over the output of the phasorbank, you get interesting scales emerging.
