but since os-x's fs is case-insensitive (though case-aware), it should 
be able to start it with "pd" too, or am i mistaken?
(i haven't checked it)

the joys of name-clashes, since "gem" is already taken at sourceforge 
(though dead, afaik)
and i thought "pure-data-gem" and "puredata-gem" both too long names
