[PD] Ticking / looping sound

Hi,

I have downloaded severeal versions of PD, but so far I have only 
managed to run Pd version 0.38.4-extended-RC8 properly. Both Pd version 
0.39-2 compiled for Macintosh and Pd version 0.40-0 test 07 compiled 
for Macintosh OSX 10.4 (i386 or ppc) (5 Megabytes) 'tick' periodically 
(quite fast) as soon as any sound is produced.

Any ideas what this could be? I'm running PD on a 1.67 Ghz G4 
PowerBook, Mac OSX 10.4.7.
