[Pd] Loading externals in Linux

Hello.
I'm once again trying to control my school's Moog with Pd, this time
going with the serial port on my new laptop.
I downloaded and compiled the [comport] external.  I moved the file
comport.pd_linux to /usr/local/lib/pd/extra.  If I open the
comport-help file, which I moved to the same folder, it opens fine.
However, if I start a new patch and add a [comport] object, it is
unable to load.  Why does [comport] not load, while [expr] and its
cousins do?  Does Pd not check /usr/local/lib/pd/extra?
