[Pd] Installing Pd on Linux

So I untar this gz file and cd to the src directory.  I follow the
instructions, and pd installs to /home/chuckk/pd-0.40.0-2.  If I first
move the whole folder to /usr/local, I can't configure it as non-root.
 Isn't installation supposed to default to some /usr/.. folder, or is
that only if I install as root?
