[PD] error compiling PD.

Hi,
I followed the instructions for compiling pd extended from here  
http://puredata.org/docs/developer/Debian.
Unfortunately i get this error right at the start pretty much

/usr/bin/m4: unrecognised option '--debugfile=autom4te.cache/traces.0t'
Try '/usr/bin/m4 --help' for more information
autom4te: /usr/bin/m4 failed with exit status 1

Any ideas? Im on debian unstable pentium 4
