Yes, I got much further after installing libgsl0-dev
Now things seem to be choking on
/pdp_imageproc_mmx.o
I'm probably missing another library - I'll do some searching and hopefully
figure it out.

If you look at the list of files you will see .../include/gsl/gsl_block.h
There should be some way in $(distribution)'s package manager to find
out which package provides a given file, otherwise there is the internet
and its fine search engines.
(I use gentoo, but that seems to have "equery belongs existingfile =>
package" but not "equery provides missingfile => package")
