Actually, I was corrected, this is what you should actually do:
mkdir pure-data
cd pure-data
cvs co abstractions
cvs co doc
cvs co extensions
cvs co externals
cvs co -r stable_0_40 pd
cvs co packages
cvs co scripts
cd packages
make patch
cd linux_make
make install && make package
