yes, you were correct, when i destroyed the window it crashed not rendering, sorry. But i found a nice work around [at least for ubuntu linux and ati 9800 radeon card.]

go here:

http://albertomilone.com/driver.html

and add the bleeding edge repository.
install that driver and devel
re-compile Gem and no crashes.

is it really turning rendering off or is it destroying the gemwindow?

the latter performs the former, but i only heard of people (lately) that 
  experienced crashes when destroying the gemwindow.

however, it is a serious bug.
