Yeah, tell me about it! All my precious data is currently on a semi
broken laptop which doesn't work unless I stand it on it's end, and
spontaneously reboots every so often.

rdiff-backup is your friend (and it's apt-get installable). It lets you
forget all about backups until you actually need to recover something.
