AGC, AKA automatic gain control. The preamp is carefully balancing the
audio signal at just the right level for you to get feedback without
it maxing out. The M-Audio card is a professional audio card so it doesn't
have a built in AGC.

You need something that fixes the input at a fairly even level, something
like the attached patch maybe.
