[PD] Akai MPD16 midi controller to MAC Powerbook??

Hi all,
I'm trying out an interactive system using the above hardware in Pd, but have been unsuccessful connecting the midi controller via the 'Audio Midi Setup,'- in Utilities.
Can anyone give me a step-by-step guide to making this work?
Would be mighty grateful!
