[PD] can't setup midi device - maybe alsa is missing.

Have a look at what 
ls /dev/midi*
gives you.
You may have to link the midi device to one that PD can recognise.
I have to do this every time, before I start PD:

sudo ln -s /dev/midi1 /dev/midi
