[PD] hid without polling

Yes, you usually need an index mark to reset the counter. Some kind of 
switch or magnetic or optical sensor to detect an absolute position. But 
something's wrong if your count needs to be reset more than once, as 
long as you respect the speed limit for detecting transitions on the 
encoder output, and take into account the uncertainty of the index position.
