I don't think that there are any advantages to make those extra 
complications. When I type "pd" I don't want to be running Vanilla unless 
I specify it explicitly like

   /tmp/pd-0.42-5/bin/pd -stderr backwards-compat-test.pd

But then I don't know any patch that works only on vanilla, and I'm glad 
that I'm not using pdsend and pdreceive because I wouldn't like to have to 
look for them.
