[PD] jpgs work with [pix_image] but not [pix_multiimage]

I have a bunch of JPEGs in this format:
001-LON93591.jpg JPEG 723x1080 723x1080+0+0 8-bit DirectClass 200kb

They work fine with [pix_image].  I am trying to show them by sending a
float to the right inlet with [pix_multiimage *.jpg 20] and I always get:

error: [pix_multiimage]: selection number too high: 4 (max num is 0)

Any ideas?  04.pix/02.multiimage.pd works with its included temp*.JPG files.
