If you look at the C code for all sys_gui() and sys_vgui() calls,  
those are the Tcl commands.  In 0.43 it should be pretty easy to  
receive those on the Tcl side, check out the tcl/pd_connect.tcl file.

There has probably been some changes, but overall it'll be the same.   
The startup process in 0.43 is still a topic of discussion.
